David Macdonald is a professionally qualified instrument and control engineer with over 30 years of design and project experience in the fields of process instrumentation and electronic control systems. David gained wide experience of safety systems practices during the 20 years that he worked for AECI Ltd up to 1999. Since then he has been working as an independent consultant specialising in training and project support for instrumented safety systems.

David has designed and prepared a detailed training manual on Emergency Shutdown Systems for IDC Technologies Ltd, an international training company, and has presented over 30 training workshops on this subject in Australia, South Africa, UK, Ireland and Canada. These workshops concentrate on the implementation of safety systems in conformance with the recently established international standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511. The training scope includes the practical aspects of executing complete safety projects in accordance with well-established safety life cycle procedures.
